在IDM(Information Delivery Manuals)领域,有一些工作需要完成,目前这方面的尝试远远不及所需要的水平。

I have personally been working with managing technical information in different trades since early eighties. Currently I am working as a BIM Ambassador (or Evangelist if you like) at Tekla Corporation, and my job involves promoting and advancing a true BIM-based process both externally and internally. I'm also heavily involved in buildingSMART’s work. This is the start of a series of my blogs about information management in construction.

What does BIM-based process, or in fact BIM mean? It seems that today most people have their own definition and perception of BIM. The BIM ‘arena’ is under heavy development, and we are clearly entering a phase wher BIM is becoming a household item, in terms of the industry. But back to the acronym: the usual meaning is Building Information Modeling, and the focus of activity has been in creating model-based information but not so much in how that information is used after it has been created. The main use of BIM has been to create documents more efficiently, just extrapolating what has been done with CAD for twenty years.

With a BIM-based process I mean a construction process wher most of the information is created, stored and transmitted between project parties as structured digital information, i.e. information that can be automatically processed in the receiving end, eventually with very little human intervention.

To achieve this, I feel we need to expand the meaning of BIM to also include Building Information Management. Some work has been done in this area in the form of IDM (Information Delivery Manuals), but these attempts are quite feeble and nowher near what is needed. There are big areas that need to be covered, like persistent storage, transactions, ownership, rights, and many more to enable BIM-based process. Another strong technology entering the BIM arena is Cloud.

Managing information has traditionally been a very implicit activity in the construction industry. It has equaled to managing documents, because even today, most of the technical information is handled as documents. When I say implicit, I mean that it is built into the fabric of the whole construction value chain what documents are being created and by whom, how they are distributed, updated and stored; nobody considers this very much, it more or less just happens. But when we come to the BIM world, things are VERY different: we have no tradition, no established way of working or instructions to rely on; many things need to be re-invented.

This is not an easy process for many reasons: technology is still developing strongly, the competence at user companies is not up to date, some changes in the roles of modeling parties are needed… Stay on this channel as I am soon going to cover some of the issues, possibilities and questions arising from the transition to BIM-based processes.
